When you system drive is starting to go out, you will think of updating to a new hard drive, then you will need a hard drive cloning software to copy or clone the whole contents of your old hard drive: contain your operating system, file data, programs. Especially that your hard disk contains system, you can’t directly copy & paste the system files, because this will cause system unbootable from new hard drive. So you need a third-party hard drive cloning software to do a perfect job to move all files including boot sectors and other important information related to system to the new hard disk.

For computer using, data is the most important of all. General software can be downloaded again, but data loss, recovery is not easy. So choosing a hard drive cloning software shouldn’t be careless. For computer users, easy-to-use and humanity software should be considered firstly. At the same time, professional will gain points. If it is free, so much the better. In conclusion, AOMEI Partition Assistant meet all conditions. For PC users, you can try AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition. For Windows Server users, you can try AOMEI Partition Assistant Lite Edition.

Because PC users are more than Server users, so I will take the popular Windows 7 and AOMEI Assistant Standard Edition Standard Edition as an example of cloning hard disk partition next.

  • The destination disk/partition should be equal or bigger than source disk/partition.
  • You’d better backup some important data before cloning, because they will be overwrote after sector by sector copy.
  • “Sector by Sector Copy” will copy not only the used sector, but also the unused sector, so it will spend longer time than “Copy Disk Quickly”/“Copy Partition Quickly”.
  • “Sector by Sector Copy” for disk needs no unallocated space but “Sector by Sector Copy” for a partition needs unallocated space otherwise you should delete or shrink other partitions to create an unallocated space.

Step 1: Download AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition, install and run. On the main screen, you can right click partition then select “Copy Partition” or right click disk then select “Copy disk” option. You can also select copy wizards from the left Wizards panel.

Select destination space

Step 2: If you select “Copy Partition” from the context menu. In the pop-up window, there are two methods let you choose, I choose quickly method in this example, then click “Next” to continue.

Step 3: In this step, select an unallocated partition space as the following picture, then click “Next”. Notice that there is an optional box behind the window, if your unallocated partition is in SSD, you’d better check it.

Step 4: In this step, you can adjust the above unallocated partition volume as you want, you can also change its drive letter. All is OK, click “Finish”.

Resize partition

Step 5: Back to the main menu, you can see the pending operations and preview the changes. If you think it is OK, click “Apply” button on the top tool bar to commit.

Apply copying

  • If you decide to clone a hard disk, you should also ensure you have an unallocated hard disk connected to computer.
  • When you are cloning system boot partition or some applications running on the partition which you are going to clone, AOMEI Partition Assistant will notice you to close those applications or to execute this operation under PreOS Mode.
  • The deleted or missing files can only be copied to the destination hard drive with “Sector-by-Sector Copy” method.

AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition is totally free, it will help you quickly finish copying task without data loss, so I think it is the best hard drive cloning software.
