Extend NTFS System Partition without Rebooting PC

NTFS is regarded as the newest file system, which is gradually replacing FAT/FAT32. It is the default setting in the later Windows OS, such as Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 2008 and Windows 7. You can extend NTFS partition with the help of Diskpart command or Disk Management in some circumstances. However, being different from FAT/FAT32, you may encounter many limitations. In order to explain how to extend NTFS system partition without rebooting PC, just take Windows Server 2003 as an example.

Scenario: There are two partitions: C drive (system, boot, page files and NTFS file system) and D drive (data partition and NTFS file system). The goal is to add some unallocated space from D drive to extend C drive.

Step1: Launch Partition Assistant Server Edition. Select D partition and drag the left slider bar rightwards. Some unallocated space would appear right behind C partition. As shown below.

Step2: Select system partition: C drive. Drag the right slider bar rightwards to merge the unallocated space.

Step3:Click “Apply” on the tool bar.

Step4: Make confirmation of all pending operations. Then, click “Proceed”.

Step5: All of operations have been completed successfully without restarting your computer.

Notes: Requirement of rebooting your computer happens on the next conditions

Shrink and/or move system partition, decrease its partition size and/or change its initial position.

Resizing partition while there is one or more live applications.

Extend FAT/FAT32 system partition.
