Resize Partition under Windows Server 2003 64bit

Now 64-bit processors have become the standard for systems ranging from the most scalable servers (e.g. Server 2003 64-bit) to desktop PCs (e.g. Vista 64-bit). 64-bit systems offer direct access to more virtual and physical memory than 32-bit systems, thus the maximum amount of physical memory supported by this server 2003 bit is 32GB. 64bit also offer process more data per clock cycle, enabling more scalable, higher performing computing solutions.

However, the resize server 2003 64bit partition is the most frequently asked questions by system administrators. You could achieve the resize partition operation by using DiskPart.exe or 3rd-party Partition Manager.

1. From the run menu type "diskpart.exe" to enter the command line utility to resize disk partitions in Windows Server 2003 64 bit.

Enter DiskPart.exe

2. The command "LIST VOLUME" will show you all the available volumes. Select your volume as shown below. "SELECT VOLUME 1" corresponds to the "D" volume that I want to extend. Finally extend the volume with the "EXTEND" command.

Note: There must be contiguous unallocated disk space after the partition that you want to extend. If haven't a contiguous unallocated space next to the partition you must have a 3rd-party partition software (e.g. Partition Assistant Server Edition) to resize server 2003 64bit partition.

AOMEI Partition Assistant Server Edition can resize Server 2003 64bit partition and also achieve all partition operations like what the above mentioned through using built-in disk management tool. As the screenshot below shows, you could move/resize partition by dragging the graphical rectangle bar on the disk panel.

On the above, the used and unused space of the partition is depicted within the graphical bar. You can drag the double-headed arrow to resize Server 2003 64bit partition.

In some occasions, use Diskpart.exe or built-in Disk Management Tool is incompetent for partition operations in Windows Server 2003 64-bit. Diskpart's drawback is unable to move partition from one location to another. The Partition Assistant is the only partitioning software, which can well work with both server 32bit and 64bit. It can both resize Windows 2003 partition and perform more advanced partition management operations. Therefore, we highly recommend it to system administrators for partitioning on server 2003 64-bit.
