What’s GPT partition style?
GPT (GUID Partition Table) is the standard for the layout of the partition table on a physical hard drive. The GPT based disk has some great benefits over MBR (Master Bootable Record) disk, for example, it support up to 128 primary partitions, its data structure are well defined and that helps detect data corruption easier, and also improve the odds of successful data recovery when hard drives are damaged or have bad sectors. But sometimes there is no necessity of GPT, such as when your hard drive with capacity smaller than 2TB, then you can remove GPT partition style, also you can remove GPT partition to solve other problems sometimes.
Why need to remove GPT Partition style?
You may need to install or re-install Windows on your computer, probably when you want to do a clean install or when your machine has a crash on startup. However, you meet another issue when you choose partition to install Windows and error information occurs as “ Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of GPT partition style”.
Yes, the problem is caused by GPT based disk. When installing Windows on UEFI-based computers using Windows Setup. Your hard drive partition style must be set up to support UEFI mode. you receive such an error message, because your computer is booted in UEFI mode, but your hard drive is not configured for UEFI mode. Here, removing GPT partition style is a solution, and this is also helpful in other situations. Anyway, we’ll show to how to remove GPT partition style in following.
How to remove GPT partition style?
1. Go to Command Prompt. You can also find it in the Windows Installation Disk/USB.
2. Input “diskpart” in the command line.
3. Input “list disk” to see all your disks and find the GPT styled disk. The GPT based disk is marked with asterisk icon in the last column Gpt.
4. Choose the disk (disk 1, for example) you want to remove GPT partition style by tying “select disk 1”.
5. Input “clean” to clean the disk.
Then you can input “convert mbr” to convert GPT into MBR. Or you can head back to the Disk Management, right click the drive and select “Initialize Disk” to make it an MBR disk. Finally, you can go ahead and install Windows OS.
Note: Make sure you backup data needed on the GPT partition before cleaning, because it will remove all contents of disk and start the partitioning over from scratch.
A better way to solve problem
In above situation, GPT is not able to install Windows, so you need to remove GPT partition and then change disk as MBR. Actually, AOMEI Partition Assistant combine the two operations into one to help you convert GPT to MBR directly. This will be very easy for you to solve problem.
2. Right click the GPT disk (here is disk 2) and choose “Convert to MBR”
3. Click “OK” to continue.
4. Now you can preview the result that disk 2 has been converted into MBR. Click “Apply”.
As you see, it’s so convenient to convert GPT to MBR with AOMEI Partition Assistant. In this way, you can avoid the annoyance to remove GPT Partition style via Diskpart and then initialize disk to MBR. Besides, you don’t need to worry data loss while converting since it doesn’t ask to delete anything and protects data well during operation.
