Merge All Partitions into One on Windows8\10

August 4, 2016

It’s good to merge all partitions into one on Windows8\10 due to their “Refresh your PC” feature. And without deleting, AOMEI Partition Assistant allows you to finish merging while no data loss.

Why need to merge all partitions into one?

You may have a hard drive that divided into two partitions, one for the operating system and another for data. In this way, you can wipe your operating system and re-install it while keeping your data in a separate area. Convenient but not necessary, because Windows8\10’s Refresh your PC feature will reset Windows to default setting without erasing your personal data, even if both are on the same partition. Besides, once you divide your hard drive into the two partitions, you may fill up one of the partitions and not have space for programs on your system or data files on your data partition after you do. In this situation, you must resize partition or allocate free space from one to another, then the separate partitions will no longer convenient with a need of inviting other operations. Therefore, why don’t you simply merge all partitions into one at the first place? To do so, we recommend you AOMEI Partition Assistant instead of Disk Management.

What’s the limitation to merge partitions with Disk Management?

When you want to merge multiple partitions into one with Disk Management, you must keep the system partition only and delete all the rest. Because DM can only merge a behind and adjacent unallocated space into a partition. For example, your hard drive is with system partition and data partition, then you should delete data partition to make it a behind and adjacent unallocated space so that you can merge it into the system partition with DM. If there is a third partition on the drive, delete it and merge the unallocated space into the extended system partition, so as a fourth, fifth, sixth... As you see, the limitation of DM will lead to losing data, unless you backup first ( free AOMEI Backupper is recommended) or you can simply use AOMEI Partition Assistant to merge all partition into one.
