I downloaded Windows 10 ISO from Microsoft and prepared a bootable USB drive. Then, I booted computer from the USB drive and tried to install Windows 10. Everything goes well until the window “Where do you want to install Windows?” shows - The error message “We couldn’t create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information, see the Setup log files.” pops up, and I can’t continue to install Windows 10. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone could help.”

We Couldnt Create A New Partition

Solutions of error "We couldn’t create a new partition or locate an existing one"

To fix the error we couldn’t create a new partition, here we provides you three effective methods- removing any peripherals on PC, using Diskpart, and using a third party software.

Solution 1. Disconnect any peripherals on your computer temporarily

If you have some external hard drives connected to the computer such as an SD card, USB drive, HDD, SSD or other external hard drives, Windows will usually fail to recognize it during installation and will give the same error of we couldn’t create a new partition or locate an existing one. The work around of this problem is to temporarily disconnect those peripherals and restart to install Windows 10. When the installation is completed, you can insert the external hard drive again.

Solution 2. Fix “we couldn't create a new partition windows 10” with Diskpart

Warning: this operation will delete all data on the disk which cannot create a new partition. If there is any important data, you should backup disk in advance.

Use Diskpart to fix the error, here you need to close the Windows Setup that reports the error message and click Repair button. Select Advanced tools and then choose Command Prompt to open Command Prompt window.

In the Command Prompt window, type diskpart and press Enter key to start the program.

In the Diskpart window, type the following commands:

Type list disk and identify your SSD disk number (from 0 to n disks).

Type select disk whatever disk number you have.

Type clean.

Type create partition primary.

Type active.

Type format fs=ntfs quick.

Type assign.

Type exit twice (one to get out of DiskPart, the other to exit the command line tool).

Then, reboot and start the Windows 10 installation again to check if the issue is fixed.

Solution 3. Fix the error by using third party software

Another way to solve the problem “we couldn’t create a new partition Windows 10” is to make partition where you wan to install Windows as active via Diskpart.

In diskpart command prompt, type the following commands and press Enter after each line:

You must be careful cause once the operation submit, you cannot cancel it. That would cause an invocatable error. Fortunately, you can use a third party software to replace Diskpart. Here we highly recommend you AOMEI Partition Assistant, which should be a better tool to help you convert simple volume to the primary partition and set the partition active with simply mouse-clicking.

Step 1. Install and launch AOMEI Partition Assistant. Choose the partition you want to set as active and right-click it, select Advanced ->Set Active Partition.
