“I just got a new Western Digital hard drive and it says if I want to use more than 1 large partition I must align the partitions at first. What should I do to align the partition on my Western Digital hard drive? Any suggestion will be appreciated in advance!”
Why need to align the partition on the Western Digital hard drive?
Many computer users may be puzzled about what is partition alignment and why? In fact, partition alignment refers to the alignment between 4K physical sector and cluster. For hard drive which employs 4K sectors, including both Solid State Drive (SSD) and advanced formatted mechanical hard disk, 4K alignment is a quite important issue. When we create partitions on the hard drive which use 4k physical sector, you will find the partition does not always start at the beginning of a physical sector. That means physical sector and cluster will be shifted. If you want to read the data saved in one cluster or write a file, your computer will access 2 physical sectors. Then the access time will be increasing, and the read speed will be slowing down too. What’s more, it’s a waste of disk space and the writing times will be increased.
So, if you have a Western Digital SSD which is not aligned, to maximize the performance, performing Western Digital alignment is very necessary.
How to do Western Digital Alignment?
If you meet the problem that you need to align the partitions, but you don’t know how to do it. Here provides you two methods to solve this problem.
Method 1. Align Western Digital hard drive partition via Diskpart
Diskpart is a built-in tool in Windows, and it allows you to create a new partition that has been aligned to 1024KB. That is to say, if you want to align the misaligned partition with data stored on it, you have to delete the data and create again. So, if there is important data on the partition, you’d better backup files in advance. And then, follow the guide below:
1. Press “Windows” + “R” to open the Run box, type “diskpart” in the run dialogue, and hit “Enter”.
2. In the pop-up window, input the following commands and hit “Enter” after each command to do the alignment.
select disk n (here “n” is the drive letter if your Western Digital hard drive.)
select partition m(here “m” is the partition you want to align.)
create partition primary
format quick fs=ntfs
Thus, you have already aligned the misaligned partition. If you want to do the entire disk alignment with Diskpart, all data on the disk will be deleted. Don’t want any data loss, what should we do? In this case, the second method can be helpful. You can do Western Digital alignment without data loss.
Method 2. Align Western Digital hard drive partition with the best Western Digital align utility
As doing partition alignment with Diskpart will cause data loss, you can turn to a magical third party Western Digital alignment tool to align partition without data loss. Here I highly recommend AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional – a powerful Western Digital align utility which can help you to accomplish SSD partition alignment easily and effectively.
Notice: If there are other applications running on the partition you are going to perform, close them or go into PreOS Mode to operate it.
After that, follow the specific steps below:
Step 1. Install and run AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional. Right click the specified partition and select “Advanced” > “Partition Alignment”.
Step 2.In the pop-up Window, set the sector of partition to align. Here we advise SSD users to align partition in 2048 sector. Actually, you can use the default size too.
Step 3.After that, it will go back to the main interface. Preview the result and click “Apply” > “Proceed” to complete this operation.
If the partition is already aligned correctly, AOMEI Partition Assistant will give you information to notice as “Then current partition has aligned to the selected sectors, and it does not need to align it again”.
Before you perform partition alignment task, we strongly advise you to check if there is any errors on that partition. You can follow these steps to check partition via AOMEI Partition Assistant: “Partition Menu” > “Advanced” > “Check Partition”.
If your destination disk is SSD, you can also align your partition after copying it by ticking the option “Optimize the performance for SSD”.
It’s rather than simple to align Western Digital hard drive partition in Windows 10/8/7 as long as you employ an appropriate alignment tool. After that, your Western Digital SSD can perform better than before. Besides partition alignment, AOMEI Partition Assistant also provides you with many other advanced functions, such as Resize/Delete/Merge Partitions,Allocat free space from one partition to another, Quick Partition and so on. All in all, under the help of AOMEI Partition Assistant, you can manage your disk easily and effectively.
