In order to realize dynamic disk repartition, shrinking or deleting the existing volume and then recreate new volume is a common method. However, with the Windows Server 2003 built-in disk management you could only delete one volume then recreate new one, shrinking volume is forbidden. In this situation we need multifunctional dynamic disk management software. AOMEI Dynamic Disk Manager is the one that you need. Here we have an example, a single volume (F :) occupies the whole dynamic disk as below:
To repartition this kind of dynamic disk, because of the volume is non-system volume and non-data in it; we could delete it then recreate a new one without occupy the whole disk. This task could be completed under the Disk Management.
Step 1: Right-click “My computer” -> “Management”-> “Disk Management”
Step 2: Right-click drive F: ->select “Delete volume”. Then you will find the disk becomes unallocated space and we could repartition it.
Step 3: Right-click unallocated space select “New volume”, it will pop up a wizard window, just follow the wizard and click “Next”.
Note: When the wizard pop up a window that requires you to set disk size as below:
The disk size is default as maximum size of the whole dynamic disk (40955MB), we need to change this number (here we change it to 20866MB), and then finish the operation.
You will find the new volume is created as 20866MB (20.38GB), and the rest space is showed as unallocated space, that means we could create another volume.
Repartition dynamic volume when system volume occupy the whole dynamic disk
If the single volume contains the system data or other important data, the method above is useless, we can not delete them. In this situation AOMEI Dynamic Disk Manager could help us achieve this goal.
Step 1: Launch AOMEI Dynamic Disk Manager, right-click the volume which contains the system data (for example here is drive C : ), select “Shrink volume”.
Step 2: In the pop-up window drag the right handle, leftward to shrink the system volume, click “OK”.
After that you will find an unallocated space is behind the system volume.
Step 3: Right-click the unallocated space, select “Create volume”, in the pop-up window follows the wizard to compete the operation.
Tips: you could also resize volume, set drive letter, set drive label, file system and the cluster size during creating new volume.
Step 4: After setting up all the information of the new volume, click “Commit” on the tool bar to apply the operation.
Note: To shrink system volume, in order to protect the system volume, the operation will be completed in boot mode, therefore, rebooting is necessary.
When the operation complete you will find the dynamic disk is repartitioned successfully and without reinstall the operation system.
