I bought a laptop with a 500GB hard drive. It came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. However, the drive was partitioned into one 452GB partition (C:) and a recovery partition. This partition is large enough, but I need more partitions on the hard drive to store my different kind of data. So I decide to repartition hard drive in Windows 7 to get more reasonable partitions. I used Windows Disk Management to repartition my Windows 7 hard drive. However, I had met a lot of problems such as shrink volume grayed out, etc. So, is there any easier way that for Windows 7 repartition drive?
How to repartition hard drive?
There are many situations that users want to repartition hard drive in Windows. For example, your computer came with a single partition installed operating system and other programs, and data, which is not a reasonable partition. Once the operating system crashed, the data on your hard drive will be damaged. For this situation, you need to repartition hard drive to divide your hard drive into several partitions. How to repartition hard drive in Windows 7/8/10? Here gives you the top three ways for Windows 7 partition hard drive.
Another case: Your have multiple partitions on the hard drive. But with the use of hard drive, your partitions are not reasonable as the beginning. You may face the problem that the computer running slower and slower because of the C: drive is running out of space, while there is another partition which has a lot of free space. For this case, you need to repartition hard drive - increase system partition size by allocating free space on other partitions.
Method1: Hard disk partition with Windows 7 Disk Management
Windows 7 has built-in disk partition tool - Disk Management. You can use the Disk Management to partition hard drive.
First, open Disk Management by clicking Start ->Control Panel ->Disk Management. Or right click This Computer ->Management -> Disk Management. You can see the basic situation of your hard drive: one single partition and a recovery partition.
If you want to have more partitions, here you need to shrink system partition first. Right click the C: drive, click Shrink Volume at the drop down menu.
Then, follow the steps to shrink volume. And you will get an unallocated space at the right side of C: drive.
Next, you should right click the unallocated space, select New Simple Volume at the drop down menu. Then, choose a drive letter to create a new partition.
If you have multiple partitions no the hard drive and you just only want to extend the system partition, you have to delete the partition next to the C: drive, and then, you can add the unallocated space to C: drive. Windows Disk Management can extend partition only when there is unallocated space adjacent to it. Otherwise, the Extend Volume would be grayed out, which means you cannot extend volume to unallcated space.
Method2: Repartition hard drive with Windows Diskpart
Windows Diskpart is another Windows tool that you can use to repartition hard drive in Windows 7/8/10. It can be used to create partition, extend partition, shrink partition, delete partition, format partition, etc. If you have met the problem as same as the scenario, here you need to shrink partition first, then, create partition.
Type cmd in the search box, press Enter, right click the program and choose Run as Administrator.
Type: Diskpart.exe and press Enter to open the Diskpart prompt.
Type: list disk and press Enter. It will list all disk(s) on your computer.
Type: select disk 0, press Enter.
Type: list volume, press Enter. It will list all volume(s) on your hard drive. Here you can see there is one system partition and system reserved partition. To repartition hard drive, you need to shrink system volume first to free up more space.
Type: select volume 1, press Enter.
Type: shrink desired=10240, press Enter, and it will execute the command in a second.
After Diskpart shrank partition, you can list volume again, and you will see the system partition has been shrank. As so far, you can create new primary partition on the disk.
Type: create partition primary size=10240. Press Enter.
Type: assign letter=F. Press Enter.
You can list volume to see your new partition. Format partition to NTFS or FAT32 before using it.
Windows Diskpart can fix many problems of Disk Management. However, not every one knows computer deeply. The command cannot be canceled. Thus, using command prompt to repartition hard drive in Windows 7/8/10 may cause a big damage. To repartition hard drive in Windows 7/8/10 quickly and safely, you can take use of the third way.
