Benefit from SSD to SSD Clone
Cloning from HDD to SSD is usually discussed by common computer user yet cloning from SSD to SSD is also not an uncommon topic. As a matter of fact, this type of disk cloning has almost the same benefits of normal hard drive to SSD cloning.
To be specific, if running slow on current SSD, longer boot-up time or slow application startup speed, it is time to clone old SSD to new SSD usually. As we know, more and more applications and programs have permissions to write to system drive (C:) which usually installed on SSD. Therefore, smaller SSD is likely to run out of space in computing. To gain better performance, the best solution is to upgrade smaller SSD to larger SSD, especially when SSDs are created with large capacity and become acceptable in price.
Best Free SSD to SSD Cloning Software for Windows 7/8/10
Normally, after purchasing a SSD, a dedicated cloning tool for that brand of SSD will be received at the same time. For instance, if clone SSD to Samsung SSD, we can use Samsung Data Migration (SDM) to complete the cloning task. For detailed steps of using SDM, please refer to clone hard drive to Samsung SSD. The theory also applies to Intel SSD data migration software.
These kinds of dedicated cloning software often work well but a fatal problem of these utilities is that they only work for the SSDs they come with. As a result, to make sure we are able to clone SSD to another SSD without taking manufacturers into consideration, we might as well seek help from third-party SSD to SSD cloning software.
AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard is a free and reliable hard drive partition manager that allows us to perform SSD to SSD clone on Windows 10, 7, 8, XP and Vista. No matter to clone from smaller SSD to larger SSD or clone from larger SSD to smaller SSD, it won’t let us down. The “Migrate OS to SSD” feature can assist us clone OS SSD to new SSD only without moving the entire disk. For more information on cloning Windows 7 from SSD to SSD, please see migrate OS from one SSD to another. Now download this free tool to learn how to clone SSD to SSD hard drive.
How to Clone Smaller SSD to Larger SSD in Windows 10?
In the first place, install destination SSD on the computer. If on laptop, we need to clone SSD to SSD via USB cable since most laptops have only one disk bay. Install and run AOMEI Partition Assistant then.
1. At main interface, click on “Disk Copy Wizard” in the left “Wizard”. In pop-up window, select copy method, Copy Disk Quickly or Sector-by-sector Copy.
Copy Disk Quickly: this method will clone used part on source SSD only, and the cloning process takes up less time.
Sector-by-sector Copy: it will clone every sector on source SSD including accidently formatted sections. Meanwhile, more time required.
2. Select the smaller SSD as source disk.
3. Select the larger SSD as target disk. Be sure to check “Optimize the performance of SSD” to align SSD partition automatically.
4. There are three options to edit partitions on target SSD, select one of them based on your needs.
5. Then it will provide an instruction on how to boot from destination SSD. After that, preview the virtual result. Click “Apply” > “Proceed” to execute pending operations.
Tips: The process will be completed in PreOS mode and the cloning time depends on how much data on source SSD. After cloning progress completed, we need to either remove previous SSD or change boot priority in BIOS to boot from target SSD. It is a good idea to format system drive on source SSD after everything works well on new SSD.
SSD to SSD Clone and Alignment
During SSD cloning, SSD partition 4K alignment is not an affair that we can ignore. SSD adopt the smallest 4K sector in file system to save data. If the smallest 4K allocation units are not always aligned in SSD, the performance of SSD could be affected. For instance, you may find small files take up large disk space. After checking “Optimize the performance of SSD” option, AOMEI Partition Assistant will automatically align SSD partition to 4K sector.
Check if the partitions are well-aligned using Diskpart in CMD. Open Command Prompt and then type these commands in order: diskpart > list disk > select disk n(n is the SSD) > list partition. Check the “Offset” column. If it is the multiple of 1024KB, the partition has been aligned well. To learn more about SSD partition alignment, please visit Diskpart: SSD alignment Windows 10.
AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard is powerful software to clone SSD to SSD free of charge and ensures securely boot at the same time. Cloning from HDD to SSD in Windows 7/10 is also supportable. It makes hard drive transferring easier with its user-friendly interface and easy-to-follow wizards. What’s more, more advanced features are embedded with AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional which provides migrate OS from GPT disk to SSD without reinstalling service.
