It is better to expand VMware hard disk size with Command Line in Windows (Server 2003) when it is out of space. Then increase VMware boot disk size after that.

About increasing VMware hard disk size

One day, when you use up all the space on virtual disk, you may find ways to solve the problem. There are always two solutions for you: one is to add a second disk on your virtual machine, the other is to expand the disk. To some extent, it is easy to add another virtual hard drive. However, many people prefer to resize VMware disk in order to avoid reinstalling the system or changing the data location.

The VMware supports a command line tool "vdiskmanager.exe". Only with it, the VMware disk can be expanded yet not its virtual partition. Absolutely, resizing VMware partition is also a big problem for you. In order to expand the volume, you must use the third party partition software to achieve the goal.

Preparations for expanding VMware disk in Windows

  • Make sure your virtual machine is powered off completely and delete the snapshots on your virtual machine.

  • Find out the location of "VMware-vdiskmanager.exe". Generally speaking, it locates in the VMware installation directory, like "C:/Program Files/VMware/VMware Server/vmware vdiskmanager.exe".

  • Locate your entire path to Windows virtual machine disk (vmdk), like "D:/Virtual Machines/Sever 2003Ent-x64/Windows Sever 2003 Enterprise x64 Edition.vmdk".
