My second hard drive not showing in Win10 Explorer

“I have newly purchased a 1TB hard drive and installed it on my computer that is running Windows 10. But the problem is that when I open File Explorer, it is not appearing when I open Disk management, it shows as unallocated. What happens? How can I make the new second hard listed in File Explorer? Format the new hard drive with a specific file system

Method 1. Format new hard drive within Windows 10 Disk Management

You can format your new hard drive in Windows using the Disk Management tool, and the specific steps are as follows:

1. Press “Windows” + “R” to open the Run box, and type “diskmgmt.msc” and press “Enter” to open the disk management.

2. Then, it will pop-up a window to notify you that you must initialize the disk before logical manager can access it. Choose the partition style you need and click “OK

3. Then the new disk will show as unallocated space. Right-click the disk and select “New Simple Volume”.

4. In the pop-up window, you can follow the New Simple Volume Wizard to format partition in your need.

Method 2. Format a new drive in Windows 10 from Command Prompt

You can also format a new hard drive from Command Prompt. Here are the detailed steps:

1. Press Windows + R, input “cmd” to open Command Prompt.

2. Type diskpart and hit Enter key.

3. Run commands as follows:

  • list disk

  • select disk n, n refers to the number of the new hard drive.

  • create partition primary

  • format fs=ntfs

  • assign letter=h

Method 3. Format a new large hard drive in Windows 10 with FAT32

If your new hard drive is larger than 32GB and you want to format it with FAT32 file system, as you want to make this hard drive become workable under different devices like Windows PC, Mac PC, etc., you can achieve this goal within Disk Management or Dikspart.
