About UEFI Bootloader

A file with EFI file extension is an Extensible Firmware Interface file. EFI files are Bootloader executables, exist on UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) based computer systems, and contain data on how the boot process should proceed. If UEFI Bootloader is damaged or lost, you cannot boot the computer. In this case, you should repair UEFI Bootloader.

How to repair Windows 10 UEFI Bootloader?

Before repairing UEFI Bootloader, we should first check if the Motherboard supports UEFI mode. Here is a litter trick. Right click the computer and select Manage. Then click Disk Management, and right click the disk you want to check. If the pop-up window has the option Convert to MBR, it is UEFI mode. If the Motherboard supports UEFI boot and the Bootloader has issues, you can use the following methods to repair it.

Method 1. Using Bootrec.exe

Windows has embedded with Bootrec.exe tool. It is a computer program file which can be used to repair MBR, Boot Sector, Boot Configuration Data, etc. To use Bootrec.exe, you have to enter into Windows RE. You can follow the steps below to run Windows 10 Bootloader repair.

Step 1. Insert Windows 10 installation media and boot from it. If you don’t have Windows 10 installation media, you can download Windows 10 Media Creation tool to create one.

Step 2. Press any key as instructed. Select a language, time, currency, keyboard, or input method, then click Next.

Step 3. Click Repair your computer, then select Troubleshoot.

Step 4. Choose Command Prompt in Advanced Options.

Step 5. Type bootrec.exe and hit enter, then input these commands and run one by one.

  • bootrec /FixMbr

  • bootrec /FixBoot

  • bootrec /ScanOs

  • bootrec /RebuildBcd

Step 6. Type exit and press Enter. Then restart the computer to see if the issue is solved.

Method 2. Using AOMEI Partition Assistant

Besides using Bootrec.exe, you can also repair Windows 10 UEFI Bootloader with AOMEI Partition Assistant. This software allows you to make a bootable USB drive and run Windows Bootloader repair without CD. The bootable USB allows you to enter into Window PE to check disk error and fix MBR.

Step 1. Download free AOMEI Partition Assistant in a running machine to make bootable USB.

Step 2. At the left column, click Make Bootable Media. Confirm the operation you are going to do and then click Next to continue.

Step 3. At next page, click USB Boot Device and then click Proceed.

Step 4. It will remind you the USB drive needs to be formatted and all the data on it will lose. If there are important files on it, make sure create a backup in advance.

Step 5. After making bootable USB drive, boot the computer which has UEFI Bootloader issue. It will bring you to the main interface of AOMEI Partition Assistant in Windows PE.

Step 6. Then you could use AOMEI Partition Assistant to check disk errors in the system hard drive with Disk Surface Test feature.

Step 7. Also, you can use Rebuild MBR to repair Bootloader.

After solving the issue, it is recommended to make a system image backup. If there is any issue happens to your computer, you can restore it to an earlier state.
