Due to the users’ high demand for writing and reading speed, SSD has become more and more popular among PC or laptop users. Actually, in order to allow you to take full use of SSD, there are a few ways for uses to optimize it in Windows 8 and 8.1.

How to Optimize SSD in Windows 8 and 8.1?

If you are a user of Windows 8 or 8.1 and your hard disk is SSD; meanwhile, you want to make SSD work at best performance, you can do as the following to optimize SSD in Windows 8/8.1.

1. Make Sure System is Running AHCI Mode

If your system is Windows 8 PC, the first thing for you to optimize SSD in Windows 8 is to check system is running ACHI mode or not. What you need to do is entering BIOS setup to check it, if it isn’t AHCI mode, you should change SATA controller mode to AHCI mode.

2. Confirm TRIM is Enable

TRIM is an essential function in SSD which can boot the performance of SSD and prolong the lifespan of SSD. Therefore, you should make sure this function is available as the following shows.

Click Start Menu and then input “cmd exe” to launch the Command Prompt. And then enter “fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify” into the pop-up window.

No GUI Boot

3. Disable Superfetch

In order to optimize SSD by disabling Superfetch, click Search and

put “services.msc” and then press Enter button. Find “Superfetch” in the pop-up windows and double click it and then you can disable “Superfetch” as the following shows.

DisableSuperfetch

4. Disable Disk Indexing

Disk indexing is for shortening the time to access files on hard disk drive. Due to SSD has a much shorter response time than HDD, here’s no need to enable disk indexing for SSD. You can click SSD, choose Properties and then in General tab, uncheck “Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties”.

Disable Disk Indexing

5. Align Partition

AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional is an all-in-one software which devotes to partition management. It is able to help you align partition (both HDD and SSD) to increase the performance of disk. Furthermore, it allows users to migrate OS to SSD, convert primary partition to logical, convert dynamic disk to basic, make bootable CD and more other useful features.

Step1: Download, install and open AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional, right click the partition you plan to align and then choose Advanced>Partition Alignment.

Align Partition

Step2: In the pop-up window, you can choose the sector. After doing that, please click OK to continue.

Choose Sector

Step3: Click Apply to perform the operation.

Click Apply

Note:

  • If the partition is already aligned correctly, AOMEI Partition Assistant will give you information to notice you as "The current partition has aligned to the selected sector, and it does not need to align it again". Then, you don’t have to do it again.
  • After aligning partition, the location of the data on that will be changed but there’s no damage to the data, so take it easy.
  • If there are a lot of data in the aligning partition, it will take a long time to finish the task, so please be patient.

As for the ways of SSD optimization in Windows 8/8.1, you can do all or choose some of them. But no matter which one you choose, there will be improvement for SSD’s performance.
