Dynamic Disk and Basic disk in Windows 2000 Server
In Windows Server 2000, a new disk storage type has been defined and exposed in Windows Disk Management snap-in; Earlier Windows NT used only basic disk to manage data storage:
Basic disk storage uses normal partition tables supported by all versions of Windows, MS-DOS, etc. A disk initialized for basic storage is called a basic disk that can hold primary partitions, extended partitions, and logical drives.
Dynamic disk storage is supported by Windows 2000 and later operating systems. A disk initialized for dynamic storage is called a dynamic disk, which can hold simple volumes, spanned volumes, mirrored volumes, striped volumes, and RAID-5 volumes. Within dynamic disk, you can perform disk and volume management without having to restart the operating system.
Users can upgrade a disk from basic to dynamic with the Windows 2000 Disk Management Snap-in. In Programs, go to select Disk Management from Administrative Tools. To upgrade your disks, you can right-click the disk to upgrade it to dynamic disk storage.
