Why convert basic disk to dynamic?

Compared with basic disk, dynamic disk owns its unique features. It allows you to create spanned volumes, thus you can make better use of the available disk space by combining unallocated space in volumes that go across multiple disks. You can also create stripped volumes or mirrored volumes on dynamic disk, to improve read-write performance or protect data. To experience the advanced features of dynamic disk, it is wise to convert disk from basic to dynamic.

How to convert to dynamic disk in Windows?

In fact, it is rather simple to convert a disk to dynamic in Windows operating system. Two methods will be introduced in the next context.

Convert to dynamic disk within Disk Management

Disk Management, a Windows built-in tool, is a nice choice to convert disk. See the steps below:

1. Access Disk Management (Press Windows + X simultaneously and choose Disk Management among pop-up results.

2. Right click the basic disk that you need to convert to dynamic, and choose “Convert to Dynamic Disk” option.

3. In this small window, confirm the selected disk is the disk that you need to convert and click “OK”.


4. Then, click "Convert" and "Yes" to perform this operation.


After a while, the disk will be converted to dynamic successfully.

PS.: If you encounter the option of “Convert to Dynamic Disk” Greyed out issue and the disk that will be converted is MBR partition style and with capacity beyond 2TB, you can use AOMEI Partition Assistant to convert basic disk to GPT without losing data at first. Then, you will be able to convert it to dynamic.
