You may wonder why should we move boot partition in Windows 10. The answer is to make full use of computer space while managing partitions. There are basically two reason to move boot partition.
First: improve the speed of PC. Sometimes you want to move windows 10 boot partition to another drive like SSD for a faster speed, this function can be very helpful.
Second: extend partition. Think of the situation where your computer partitions go out of space, the computer running speed will slow down and the system will warn you with “low disk space” notice. To solve the problem, the first thing you think is to extend partition or increase partition space. However, there is no unallocated space right behind the to-be-managed partition, what should you do? To move partition which is not allocated yet is exactly what you should do.
How to move boot partition windows 10
Case 1: move boot partition to another drive
"I want to clone only the boot partition (C:/) of a HDD with 3 partitions (Docs, etc. on these), and clone it to an SSD drive that will be my boot drive with all my programs. I assume this will speed but my PC. The SDD is 96Gb, and the C:/partition is 98GB, but only 40Gb are used, so there is plenty of space. So far I can only find software to clone a whole HDD, not a partition.
In this situation, he wants to move boot partition to another drive to speed his cpmputer. But he could not find a software to clone a single partition. In this case, AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional can provide help."
Step 1: right-click the partition which you want to copy and select "Copy Partition".
Step 2: In the pop-up window, there are two different way to copy your partition:
Copy Partition Quickly - only copy the used space of the partition and supports resizing partition during the copy process (Recommend).
Sector by Sector Copy - copy the whole partition no mater it is used or not, this may need a considerably long time.
The ssd drive is smaller than C partition, so “Copy Partition Quickly” is recommended. Select “Copy Partition Quickly” then click "Next". You can also confirm your operations in the pop-up window.
Step 3: In next window, select the destination location (unallocated space) to hold your source partition, and then click "Next". To save the operation, click Apply.
1. The data on the destination location will be covered by the source data, so data backup on the destination dive is very important.
2. In Windows 10, as well as Windows 8/7, the boot partition is separated from system reserved partition, so do not forget move system reserved partition to ssd.
Case 2: move partition to extend space
"My C drive is running out of space and its becoming a problem. It has 90 something gb on the C partition and my hard drive has some 300 gb of unallocated space. I know how I can expand the C volume, but it isn’t next to any unallocated space. Is there a way to move the volume next to the unallocated space to expand it, or vice versa."
In case 1, he actually wants to extend partition. There must be an unallocated space adjacent to the partition which you are going to move; otherwise it would never be moved. Using Resize Partition to release some unallocated space if there is no unallocated space on your hard disk.
Step 1: Download AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional and start the program.
Step 2: As we can see from above picture, C partition the boot partition. As there is no unallocated space adjacent to C partition, so we must release some space from adjacent partition. Right click D partition, choose resize partition.
Step 3: Put the mouse on the left side of D partition and drag it rightward until the unallocated space reach your need. For example, what you want to release unallocated space before is 200.20GB. Then click OK.
Step 4: Put the mouse on the selected partition and drag it rightward when the mouse become a cross crux, then click OK.
Step 5: Click apply at the left upper side to save the operation.
After all this done, you can extend your C partition with unallocated space so that you can improve the speed of PC.
When you meet this two cases, do not worry, AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional can help you to move boot partition windows 10 to another drive or to extend partition. Also you can use this software to merge partitions and Allocated Free Space. Besides Windows 10, AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional also supports Windows 8/8.1/7, Windows Visa, XP, 2000 Professional SP4.
