Overview of Allocate Free Space

A user on a forum website asks: "Hello everyone, hope you can help. Stuck with one simple problem: how do i reallocate space between two partitions? I have shrunk one already - but it just created an empty volume on the same partition. How do i move it to another partition, which I want to become bigger? Thanks for your help. PPS: Oh, and BTW - I don't want to delete data on partitions! I just need to reallocate free space."

Allocating free space is a function provided by AOMEI Partition Assistant which helps you to redistribute free partition space. This function has improved the traditional way of resizing partitions. Users can allocate free space from one partition to another to enlarge the destination partition. Therefore, when you need to extend a partition, you do not have to resize or shrink another partition to get free space first. You can just directly transfer free space from the source partition to the destination partition to increase partition. It is very easy and fast.

You need to allocate free space  in below situations:
  • The target partition is out of space and it is in dire need to be enlarged so as to be able to continue to save files or folders and run fast and correctly.

  • You want to keep fewer partitions on the hard disk and make the management of your disks easier.

  • You want to make full use of the space you have by allocating the unallocated space on the hard disk to the existing partition.

  • You want to shrink the source partition and make all the partitions on the disk seem in average size.

How to Allocate Free Space from One Partition to Another

Before you do

  • Download and install AOMEI Partition Assistant on a Windows computer.
  • Please make sure there is another partition with free space on the same disk because you can only allocate the free space from one partition to another.

  • If there are other applications running on the partition which you are going to perform, AOMEI Partition Assistant will notice you to close those applications by clicking "Retry" (it is also the recommended option) or to execute this operation in PreOS Mode by choosing "Restart Now" (Your computer will restart if you press this button.) or just to click "Cancel Operations" to finish this operation by rebooting your computer and redoing it without opening those applications.

This tool is very useful for you to extend your partition with the space of another partition. If you would like to use this feature, please first upgrade to a paid version of AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional, Server, or above versions.

To Allocate Free Space

1. Launch AOMEI Partition Assistant, right-click the partition which you want to allocate free space from, and select "Allocate Free Space". (As you can see from the following screenshot, I choose the D: partition as the source partition.)

Allocate Free Space

2. Type in the size of the free space which you want to cut from the D: partition and this free space will be directly added to the destination partition. (Take the following screenshot as an example - I will allocate 50GB’s free space from the D: partition to the C: partition.)

3. You can preview the shrink operation by viewing the "Pending Operations". To commit the "Pending Operations", please click "Apply" and "Proceed". You can also tick "Check partitions before execution" to go through the partition in case of any error in it. In default, this option is ticked.

4. The process will start. Please wait until it is finished. Then, you can close the program to exit.

Conclusion

Following the steps above, you can easily and directly extend one partition with the space from another one on the same drive. After this performance, you can use the allocated space in the destination partition.

Besides, you can enjoy more convenience with the help of AOMEI Partition Assistant. You can move partitions, merge partitions, change partition type ID or serial number, and things like that. All in all, with the help of AOMEI Partition Assistant, you can handle the partitions on your computer more easily.

Notes:

  • This operation may change the original location for your data but will not delete them, yet. To guarantee the safety of your data, we suggest you learn the tutorial "How to Safely Partition" before executing this operation. You can also back up the data on the disk to another safe place.

  • After executing the allocation operation, the program will take some free space from the source partition to the target partition. In other words, the source partition will be shrunk, and the target partition will be expanded.

FAQs:

Q: How long will it take to allocate free space?

A: It depends on the size of the partition you want to allocate. The program will also prompt an estimated time after clicking the "Apply" button.

Q: Is it possible to use the feature "Allocate Free Space" to extend a partition with a partition space from another hard disk?

A: No, currently, you can only use the feature to extend a partition with the partition space on the same disk.
